Peer to Peer Support
|
What makes FHF unique is the fact that nearly all our staff are either parents of children with disabilities, individuals with disabilities or spouses of individuals with disabilities. This isn't by accident, it's because we know the value of peer-to-peer support. Parents want to speak to someone that has "been there and done that". There will be plenty of professionals offering advice, but if they never parented a child with a disability, it's just professional advice. Parents want to speak to someone that understands the initial shock of finding out their child has a disability, all the challenges that come along with that, but most importantly the heart felt stories of success shared by most. Professionals often tell parents what their child can't or won't do. Our staff encourages parents to stay positive and dream big for their child. All children are born with natural gifts, but often you don't immediately recognize it. We mentor parents to think about the disability as nothing more than a single characteristic of their child, not the defining factor. |
